SMBC Nikko, Uniswap sign MoU for Japan DeFi Gateway

SMBC Nikko Securities and blockchain developer Nethermind signed a memorandum of understanding with Uniswap Labs, Base and the Nyx Foundation on October 2, 2026, setting out a five-party plan to build a Japan-focused decentralized finance gateway. According to Crypto.news, the partners aim to complete the project by mid-2027, with no live product launched and no public approval from Japan’s Financial Services Agency.

The DeFi Gateway is a development project led by SMBC Nikko Securities and Nethermind with Uniswap Labs, Base and the Nyx Foundation, targeting completion by mid-2027. It would use Uniswap v4 hooks to build compliant liquidity pools with anti-money laundering, counterterrorism financing and investor protection controls, but no product is live and the FSA has not approved one for public use.

Key facts

  • SMBC Nikko and Nethermind signed the MoU on Thursday, October 2, 2026, bringing Uniswap Labs, Base and the Nyx Foundation into a project the two companies had previously run as a two-party research effort.
  • The partners target completion within roughly nine months, describing the gateway as expected to be completed by mid-2027.
  • Uniswap v4 hooks would enforce anti-money laundering, counterterrorism financing and investor protection mechanisms at the pool level.
  • Nethermind leads technical design and delivery across engineering, AI integration and smart-contract security; Uniswap Labs supplies protocol integration and liquidity-deployment expertise; Base supports deployment in its Ethereum layer-2 ecosystem; and the Nyx Foundation advises on market-making strategies and hook structures.
  • No supported tokens, customer eligibility requirements, fees or minimum investment amounts were disclosed.

A research partnership that became a five-party build

SMBC Nikko and Nethermind announced their initial research partnership on March 6, 2026, focused on connecting Japanese investors with automated market makers while testing risk controls, user safeguards and AI tools. That earlier phase examined smart contracts, artificial intelligence and zero-knowledge proofs, and the two companies later presented a conceptual DeFi access gateway at Yield Summit 2026.

The October agreement converts that work into a defined development structure with named technical roles. SMBC Nikko leads regulatory discussions and contributes compliance, risk modeling and portfolio management expertise. PANews reported that the collaboration centers on three development efforts: agentic vaults built on verifiable and reproducible AI alongside an intuitive user interface; the Uniswap v4 hooks framework for compliant pools; and asset management strategies covering stablecoins and real-world assets.

The two accounts overlap on the core structure. PANews names Coinbase Technologies as the entity behind Base, while Crypto.news refers to the same participant simply as Base. Neither report identifies an issuer, stablecoin or tokenized security committed to the gateway.

Hooks, agentic vaults and what is still undefined

The compliance layer rests on a mechanism Uniswap Labs introduced in July 2026 with Permissioned Pools, a v4 hook standard that checks issuer-managed allowlists before approved wallets can swap or provide liquidity. The company said that approach enforces compliance rules at the pool level instead of relying on a website or an offchain check. SMBC Nikko’s release goes further, saying the group will refine and validate automated market-making and v4 hook strategies for Japan, including token and protocol due diligence.

Alongside the pool design, the partners are exploring what the announcement calls agentic vaults — systems SMBC Nikko defines as AI tools that could support or execute investment decisions. Its March research described automation operating within predefined parameters rather than giving AI unrestricted control. PANews frames the vault work around verifiable and reproducible AI.

Base’s contribution includes technical feedback around x402, an open payment protocol developed by Coinbase that lets software and AI agents make stablecoin payments for APIs and online services using HTTP payment requests.

What the MoU does not contain is as notable as what it does. There is no public launch date, no final customer-access model and no completed legal structure for the proposed liquidity pools.

Why it matters

Japan is one of the few major markets where a large securities house has moved from observing DeFi to signing a development agreement with core infrastructure providers. If the gateway reaches production, eligible Japanese investors would gain a route into onchain liquidity that is wrapped in compliance controls rather than isolated from them — a materially different proposition from the permissionless pools available globally.

The timing overlaps with regulatory restructuring. The FSA created a dedicated crypto and stablecoin division in August 2026, consolidating crypto supervision and digital payments policy into one unit, and published material during the year covering financial-crime risks in DeFi, stablecoins and self-hosted wallet transactions. A July notice addressed a FATF DeFi report on money laundering, terrorism financing and proliferation-financing risks, including questions about which entities exercise control or sufficient influence over DeFi services.

Stablecoin efforts by Japan’s largest banks are running on a similar calendar, with the three megabanks targeting stablecoin transactions by March 2027 through a council covering issuance infrastructure, governance and operating rules. Base has separately seen growth in tokenized securities activity: Crypto.news reported that Base tokenized-stock DEX volume reached $100 million in a single day in September, while Uniswap v4 handled $139.3 million of such trades over the preceding 30-day period measured by Token Terminal. SMBC Nikko has not said those assets will be available through its Japanese gateway.

What to watch

The next concrete milestones are the technical framework, testing of the proposed pool controls, and continued discussions with Japanese authorities, all of which must be completed before any customer rollout. SMBC Nikko has said development progress will be shared with government and regulatory authorities including the FSA, so the pace of those disclosures — and whether the mid-2027 target holds — will indicate how far the project has advanced beyond planning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Has Japan’s FSA approved the DeFi Gateway?

No. Project progress will be shared with the FSA and other authorities, but the announcement does not amount to regulatory approval and describes the work as a development project.

What are Uniswap v4 hooks used for in this project?

The partners plan an open framework for liquidity pools in which v4 hooks add anti-money laundering, counterterrorism financing and investor protection mechanisms around pool activity.

When is the DeFi Gateway expected to be completed?

SMBC Nikko says the gateway is expected to be completed by mid-2027, and development progress will be shared with government and regulatory authorities including the FSA.

Which companies are involved in the project?

SMBC Nikko Securities and Nethermind jointly lead it, with Uniswap Labs, the Nyx Foundation and Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network operated by Coinbase, taking defined technical roles.

Will stablecoins and tokenized assets be traded through the gateway?

The MoU says asset-deployment strategies will cover digital assets such as stablecoins and real-world assets, but no issuer, stablecoin or tokenized security has been committed and no supported tokens were disclosed.
