Summary

  • Ripple recruited London Metal Exchange treasury executive Joseph Thompson to strengthen its institutional trading and tokenized asset strategy.
  • Ripple Prime offers total return swaps, while the XRP Ledger supports tokenized asset issuance and transfers for institutional financial clients.
  • Ripple holds over $1 billion in regulatory net capital and completed $275 million note financing to support institutional expansion.

Ripple has recruited London Metal Exchange executive Joseph Thompson to strengthen its institutional trading and tokenized real-world asset strategy. Thompson serves as senior vice president and head of treasury at the London Metal Exchange. He will leave on August 31, 2026.

He will join Ripple’s Trading and Markets team, bringing experience from a major global commodities marketplace. His appointment strengthens Ripple’s ability to connect blockchain products with established markets for commodities and other traditional financial instruments.

Moreover, Thompson brings knowledge of treasury operations, liquidity management, and market infrastructure. These skills could support Ripple’s institutional business. The XRP Ledger remains important to that strategy because institutions can issue and transfer tokenized assets through its blockchain infrastructure.

Ripple Prime Expands Institutional Market Access

Ripple’s institutional expansion also includes a Delta One business operating through its Ripple Prime platform for clients. The service provides total return swaps linked to United States equities, equity indices, and digital assets. It targets professional investors.

Hedge funds and asset managers can gain economic exposure through these derivatives without purchasing the underlying securities directly. Consequently, institutions can incorporate total return swaps into portfolio hedging, financing, market exposure, and investment strategies.

Additionally, Ripple Prime provides clearing, financing, and prime brokerage services across digital assets, foreign exchange, and derivatives markets. Ripple structures the platform around a single-counterparty model, allowing clients to access markets through one institutional relationship. That arrangement may simplify execution, financing, and collateral management for firms operating across traditional and blockchain-based markets.

Capital Supports Ripple’s Broader Financial Strategy

Ripple Prime holds more than $1 billion in regulatory net capital, providing support for its institutional operations. Meanwhile, Ripple completed a $275 million private placement of senior unsecured notes, adding resources for its financial-services expansion.

Tokenization can represent traditional assets on blockchain networks, while prime brokerage supplies the liquidity and financing supporting their use. However, Ripple must integrate these services while meeting demanding regulatory, operational, and risk management standards across multiple financial markets. Thompson’s commodities market experience gives Ripple expertise as it builds infrastructure linking traditional finance with blockchain-based products.
