Key Insights:
- Crypto attack losses from wrench attacks exceeded $30 million during H1 2026.
- France emerged as a major hotspot following incidents of investor data exposure.
- Criminals increasingly target families through home invasions and kidnappings.
Chainalysis reports that violent crypto attacks have stolen more than $30 million during the first half of 2026. The total already exceeds half of 2025’s record $58 million loss. Meanwhile, home invasions, kidnappings, and attacks on relatives have become more prominent across reported cases.
France now leads in publicly known incidents after a sharp increase in crypto attack incidents that began in 2025.
Violent Crypto Attack Incidents Accelerate in 2026
Chainalysis recorded 12 successful payments from 46 violent theft attempts through late June. That equals a 26% success rate, compared with 49% in 2025 and 67% in 2024. However, attempted extractions show a larger financial footprint than completed crypto attacks.
Reported demands, coerced transfers, frozen funds, and recovered assets reached about $107 million during 2026’s first half. Comparable totals reached roughly $180 million in 2025 and $316 million in 2024. Chainalysis also says reported cases likely undercount the actual number of attacks.
Attack methods have shifted alongside the rising number of incidents. For instance, home invasions account for 37% of documented cases in 2026, up from 26% in 2023. Kidnappings account for 52%, compared with 39% in 2023.
France Becomes the Main Crypto Attack Hotspot
France, the United States, Brazil, and Thailand have recorded the highest cumulative counts of crypto attack incidents since 2023. However, France has moved far above its earlier baseline. The country recorded 19 known incidents in 2025 and 30 incidents through mid-2026.

Chainalysis identifies exposed personal information as the likeliest driver of France’s increase. A French tax official allegedly sold dossiers on wealthy crypto holders, according to a 2024 report.
France averaged about 1.9 crypto attacks per month in 2025 and 4.6 per month during the first half of 2026. Authorities are handling cases through JUNALCO, the country’s specialized organized crime jurisdiction. By mid-2026, authorities had made about 200 arrests, secured 88 indictments, and held 75 suspects in pretrial detention.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said authorities had documented more than 70 crypto-related violent incidents by late June. Meanwhile, attacks spread beyond Greater Paris to Strasbourg, Marseille, Grenoble, Toulouse, Nantes, and smaller communities.
On-Chain Flows Show Three Attacker Types
Chainalysis groups successful attackers based on how they move stolen cryptocurrency. Less sophisticated criminals just send the money to centralized exchanges without attempting to hide the trails.

Exchange compliance teams could freeze the funds while subpoenas identify accounts that have received stolen assets.
More experienced attackers utilize decentralized exchanges, bridges, MEV bots, and other decentralized finance tools. One tracked Bitcoin crypto attack involved intermediary wallets, THORChain Bridge, and a decentralized exchange.
The highest level of sophistication involves attackers linked to broader criminal networks. Chainalysis identified cases where stolen funds moved through instant exchanges and suspected over-the-counter laundering services. Those services had previous interactions with cartel-related laundering operations, terrorist financing clusters, and Southeast Asian money laundering networks.
