Ubisoft & Tezos launch platform for NFTs playable in AAA games

Ubisoft has launched a new platform powered by Tezos to enable the first NFTs playable in AAA games.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint for Windows PC on the Ubisoft Connect platform will feature the first NFTs. According to Paris-based Ubisoft, the first digital goods to use it will be limited-edition cosmetics that utilise blockchain technology. Ubisoft will give the first three NFTs away to players who have played the game and meet eligibility requirements.

NFTs and gaming are seemingly set up to establish an expanded relationship in 2022 and onward, but the beginnings of these efforts have not garnered universal appeal. When STALKER 2: Heart of Chernobyl announced NFT integration with “metahuman” NPCs, fans responded so aversely that the NFT implementation was entirely cancelled within hours of the studio doubling down on its functionality.

More recently were the comments made by Square Enix’s president and their belief in the “play to contribute” player base and its potential benefits. Ubisoft is among the first businesses to invest significantly in NFTs and blockchain. Ubisoft is moving forward with a test programme for “Ubisoft Quartz,” a platform created to incorporate NFTs into the publisher’s games, beginning with Ghost Recon Breakpoint.

Like more traditional instances of NFTs like art pieces, “Digits” are the NFTs that players will be able to trade and claim as different blockchain-based things in-game. Each Digit has a unique serial number. The issue is that, besides the fact that NFTs and blockchain already harm the environment, Ubisoft’s use of NFTs is unsustainable. Even if the corporation uses this as a beta or trial phase, Ubisoft Quartz’s initial release is absurd.
