According to XRPL Foundation contributor Vet, developers expect significant progress and an initial hybrid deployment during 2027. Vet also operates an XRPL validator included on the decentralized Unique Node List.
The timeline would place XRPL one year ahead of Ethereum’s planned transition, which targets comprehensive quantum resistance by December 2029. However, both networks are preparing early because nobody can accurately predict when quantum computers could threaten existing cryptographic systems.
XRPL developers plan to introduce native key rotation as an important element within the network’s wider security strategy. This feature would let users update their cryptographic keys while preserving their existing r-addresses.
Consequently, custodians and individual holders would not need to transfer XRP into newly created wallets during the transition. That design could reduce operational errors, confusion, and security risks across exchanges, payment companies, and institutional custody platforms.

Hybrid Security Deployment Will Protect XRPL During Its Quantum Transition
Developers are also preparing an emergency response system known as the Quantum-Day protocol for unexpected advances in quantum computing. This mechanism could isolate vulnerable accounts and place them into a protected state without shutting down the entire ledger.
Additionally, the development team has started testing post-quantum algorithms under practical network conditions. New security protocols would operate alongside existing cryptographic systems during the planned hybrid deployment.
This parallel structure should help developers measure performance, identify technical weaknesses, and introduce stronger protections without disrupting regular transactions. Testing will also examine how new signatures affect validators, applications, wallets, and other essential network infrastructure.
Algorand Comparison Highlights the Wider Quantum Security Race
Meanwhile, Algorand has entered the industry debate through quantum-secured accounts using Falcon-1024 signatures. Vet cautioned against describing Algorand’s current architecture as completely quantum-resistant.
Most routine Algorand operations still depend on Ed25519 signatures, which quantum computers could potentially compromise. Its consensus system also lacks complete post-quantum protection under the existing implementation.
According to Vet, Algorand expects broader integration across its network during 2027. Therefore, the competition involves comprehensive network protection rather than securing only selected accounts or transaction types.
Moreover, Ripple’s strategy involves Project Eleven initiatives and an extensive security assessment covering every XRPL layer. Auditors will examine validators, cryptographic signatures, network infrastructure, account security, and transaction processing before the final upgrade.
Developers plan to operate traditional and quantum-resistant signatures together during the 2027 testing phase. This approach should provide compatibility while wallets, exchanges, and infrastructure providers update their systems.
XRPL’s planned 2028 mainnet upgrade would complete the transition if testing and audits meet the required security standards. The roadmap establishes long-term cryptographic protection as a central priority for the network’s technical development.
