And then there was Pacha…

The Inca Creation Story

In the beginning, all was darkness and nothing existed.

Viracocha the Creator came forth from the waters of Lake Titicaca and created the land and the sky before returning to the lake. Viracocha had given rise to a universe that had no light and was inhabited by a race of Giants.

They and their leaders displeased Viracocha, so he re-emerged from the lake again and flooded the world to destroy them. He also turned some of the giant men into stones.

Viracocha decided to try again, this time creating beings similar to himself; thus, human beings were created. Then he gave the gift of light by creating the moon, the sun (Inti) and the stars.

According to legend, Inti sent two of his children—Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo—to bring order and civilization to humankind.

Emerging from the waters of Lake Titicaca, Manco Cápac and Mama Ocllo arrived to a populated land and were immediately considered divine beings. They had a mission. If their golden scepter could sink in the earth, then the land was considered fertile and would be the location of an empire.

Manco Cápac marched north and Mama Ocllo south, the scepter was sunk in the now legendary hill, Huanacauri.

This is where the great Inca city of Cusco was founded. There they built a temple in honour of their father Inti. Manco Cápac himself was worshipped as a fire and a Sun God.

Their path to Cusco became the first Inca road and Manco Capac became the first Shapa Inca, ruler of the Inca people.

Kay Pacha — $PACHA

There you have it, as requested by twitter poll, that was our version of the Inca creation story.

It is actually a combination of the variations you can find across the web, it makes for quite the legend!

If you want to go really deep, you can even draw parallels to the creation of $PACHA within these stories.

Perhaps the first world Viracocha built and destroyed is a metaphor for a previous project of Mancoshi that, in his eyes, failed.

The second creation could represent the Inca world of PACHA, Kay Pacha — the living realm, Hanan Pacha - the realm of the gods & Ukhu Pacha — the lower realm or underworld. Now created in his own image with his own ideals.

Maybe there are two leaders, the divine beings, Manco Capac (Mancoshi) and one other... Ekjakjo, Munay, Prana or someone else we don’t know about yet?

Their great journey to plant the golden sceptre and found one of the greatest empires in history, could represent the journey $PACHA must go through to achieve greatness
