Bitwise Shuts Down Its DOGE ETF — What Went Wrong?

Bitwise just shut down its Dogecoin ETF less than a year after launching it, and the numbers behind the decision tell most of the story.

The fund, trading under the ticker BWOW, will stop trading on NYSE Arca on October 14, 2026, according to Bitwise’s press release filed with the SEC.  Also flagged by CoinMarketCap.

Remaining shareholders will receive a cash payout on October 22, calculated from the fund’s October 21 net asset value.

A Short Life for a Once-Hyped Product

BWOW launched November 26, 2025, making this shutdown barely ten months later.

Techgaged had been tracking DOGE’s ETF momentum well before that, noting back in November 2025 how Bitwise advancing a Dogecoin ETF was treated as a genuinely bullish catalyst for the token at the time.

Techgaged also flagged a technical buy signal on DOGE’s chart in February 2026, when the token was tagging the lower boundary of a rising channel that had historically preceded sharp rallies.

Neither the ETF launch nor that technical setup translated into lasting demand for the fund itself.

The Weakness Showed Up Early

BWOW’s own second-quarter filing shows net assets falling from $1.15 million at the end of 2025 to just $473,547 by June 30, 2026, according to the fund’s quarterly disclosure

There were no new share creations at all during the first half of 2026, while 20,000 shares were redeemed.

August brought just $318,000 in net inflows, barely enough to reverse small outflows from July.

The fund’s single best day of trading volume, set during launch week, was only about $3 million and was never matched again.

Bitwise’s Official Explanation Leaves Out the Obvious

The company’s statement cited an effort to “optimize its product range to meet evolving investor needs,” language that notably avoids any direct mention of trading volume or asset levels.

Cumulative trading volume across BWOW’s entire lifespan sits near $300 million, a fraction of what comparable altcoin ETFs pulled in.

Hyperliquid products moved $2.1 billion, Zcash funds $1.5 billion, and Chainlink products $680 million over similar stretches.

DOGE’s Price Reaction

DOGE traded at $0.083490 on September 11, 2026 (11:30 UTC), down 4.8% over seven days. The chart shows a sharp decline tied directly to this news.

Price spiked toward $0.094 around September 5, held in the $0.084 to $0.090 range through most of the week.

Then it dropped hard to $0.083 following the September 10 announcement.

DOGE has also slipped outside the top 10 cryptocurrencies by market cap over the past year, overtaken by tokens like HYPE and ZEC that captured the institutional demand DOGE’s own ETF never did.

Watch whether other issuers follow Bitwise’s lead on their own thinly traded memecoin ETFs, since BWOW’s closure may mark the start of a broader shakeout rather than an isolated case.
