Tencent and Changyu have collaborated towards the development of a traceability platform based on blockchain. As reported in local news, this is the first time of applying blockchain technology in China’s wine industry.

The collaboration between China’s technology giant Tencent and China’s oldest wine producer Changyu was marked by a launching ceremony on July 30 in Yantai, Shandong. Tencent has revealed its plans to come up with a blockchain-based wine traceability platform based on Tencent Cloud Platform and Tencent Lingyu blockchain technology.

Based on the explanations from Changyu, the design of the platform is such that they will be able to trace the steps in wine-making and sales, including planting, brewing, distribution and management. Every bottle of wine produced will be issued with a unique traceable certificate and recorded on the blockchain network.  The unique traceable certificate will be the only digital ID card for each wine.

According to the local news, the production code is binded with the QR code through the traditional One Object One Code. This is possible through the multi-party consensus and non-tampering features of the blockchain, thereby enhancing the traceability ecology’s credibility. Hence, scanning the code helps in realizing the rapid entry of product lifecycle information.

The scannable QR codes on each bottle of wine would allow consumers’ verification of the authenticity of the wine. Likewise, when consumers scan the QR code, some of the information to be provided includes plantation information of the grape types, origins, rainfall levels, temperature information and more.

During the planting phase, the data to be available on the blockchain include the grape growth and planting management information like variety, origin, precipitation, sunshine, temperature. Hence, consumers will have full understanding of the growth process and brewing process of grapes.

It was also reported that the blockchain network will assist distributors and sales outlets in recognizing counterfeit bottles and identifying bottles that did not pass quality-control tests.

Similarly, last month, NEM announced a Symbol project to bring an end to wine tampering and counterfeiting problems in the wine industry.
