Ossoff narrowly beat David Perdue in the January 2021 runoff and defended the seat as one of two Democratic-held Senate seats in states Trump won in 2024, according to Wikipedia's race overview. His opponent, Representative Mike Collins, won the Republican runoff with 55.5 percent after an endorsement from Trump. Because the winner cleared 50 percent, Georgia needs no Senate runoff this time. She is set to become the first Black woman to serve as governor of a US state and takes office on 11 January 2027. Her opponent, businessman Rick Jackson, largely funded his own campaign and beat Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones in a primary runoff even though Trump and outgoing Governor Brian Kemp had endorsed Jones. Why Georgia matters for the Senate majority
Republicans went into the night with 53 seats, so Democrats need a net gain of four for the majority. Holding Georgia does not add a seat, but losing it would have raised the number to five. At 04:14 CET, NBC News showed 46 Senate seats for Democrats and 38 for Republicans, counting seats not up for election, and a net change of +2 for Democrats. All calls and the full Senate table are in our midterm results live ticker.
