MediaTek has officially unveiled its latest mobile processor, the Dimensity 9300, and it promises major improvements in AI, graphics, and photography. The standout feature of the Dimensity 9300 is its new CPU setup, which includes four powerful Arm Cortex-X4 cores and four high-performance Cortex-A720 cores, departing from the traditional lower-performance cores seen in many Android chipsets.

MediaTek claims that this unique CPU configuration results in a 10% to 15% reduction in power consumption for typical tasks compared to its predecessor, the Dimensity 9200. The Dimensity 9300 features a three-tier CPU approach, with one larger Cortex-X4 core clocked up to 3.25GHz and three Cortex-A720 cores clocked at 2.85GHz, along with 8MB L3 cache and 10MB of system cache.

These enhancements deliver 15% more performance at the same power or 33% lower power for the same performance as the Dimensity 9200, and up to 40% higher peak performance.

A leap forward in generative AI capabilities

MediaTek has also made significant strides in AI capabilities with the Dimensity 9300, featuring an upgraded APU 790 that offers double the integer and floating point capabilities while consuming 45% less power. The APU 790 is tailored for on-device generative AI, delivering an 8x performance boost over the previous generation, thanks to support for INT4 (A16W4) and hardware memory decompression for efficient memory usage.

The Dimensity 9300 can run a 7 billion parameter LLM at 20 tokens per second and can extend this to handle a 13 billion parameter LLM with 24GB of RAM, albeit at a slower processing rate.

On-device generative AI is becoming more feasible, offering greater security and bandwidth benefits, and MediaTek expects its partners to leverage these capabilities effectively.

Enhancements for gamers and photographers

Gamers can rejoice as the Dimensity 9300 features the Arm Immortalis-G720 GPU in a 12-core configuration, offering up to a 23% peak performance improvement and a 40% reduction in power consumption for longer gaming sessions.

The new GPU setup supports global illumination effects, memory bandwidth savings, and 2x MSAA support for high-quality graphics. The chipset also supports WQHD panels with refresh rates up to 180Hz, 4K at 120Hz, dual-active display for foldable phones, and Google’s Ultra HDR display format from Android 14.

For photography enthusiasts, MediaTek’s Imagiq 990 ISP offers up to 16 object layers of segmentation, always-on HDR capture at 4K, software bokeh, and depth effects. Additionally, the ISP now includes a dedicated OIS sensor core for enhanced image stabilization.

Enhanced security and networking

The Dimensity 9300 includes a new secure boot chip, an isolated secure computing environment, and Armv9’s Memory Tagging Extension to improve security and prevent memory exploits. In terms of networking, the chipset offers integrated support for Wi-Fi 7 and 5G sub-6GHz bands with speeds of up to 7Gbps downlink.

While the Dimensity 9300 offers impressive features and performance improvements, its adoption in the US market may be limited due to the dominance of Apple and Samsung.

However, Chinese smartphone brands are likely to utilize this chipset, and global consumers can expect to see smartphones powered by the Dimensity 9300 in the coming months and throughout 2024.

MediaTek’s latest offering positions itself as a competitive alternative to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and other flagship processors, thanks to its unique CPU configuration, generative AI capabilities, gaming enhancements, and photography features.
