Four of THORChain’s six TRON vaults were blacklisted by Tether on October 9, freezing about $1.45 million in USDT and disrupting activity on the route.

On-chain researcher Khal reported the sequence, which was covered by CoinMarketCap. The addresses later appeared to have been unfrozen at approximately 15:35 UTC, according to THORChain technical co-founder Chad Barraford, and trading was expected to resume.

The incident shows how a stablecoin issuer’s address-level controls can affect a cross-chain protocol when its operational vaults hold that issuer’s token.

Four THORChain TRON vaults were blacklisted, then appeared unfrozen

Four of THORChain’s six vaults on TRON were blacklisted, leaving two outside the reported action, and approximately 1.45 million USDT was frozen in the affected addresses. Chad Barraford said the addresses appeared unfrozen around 15:35 UTC; the apparent unfreezing was an observation of on-chain status, not a published explanation from Tether for the blacklist action or apparent reversal. The reported sequence was that the vaults were blacklisted, activity stalled, and the addresses later appeared able to move again.

TRON trading and roughly $363,000 in payouts stalled during the freeze

The interruption halted THORChain’s TRON trading, transaction signing and liquidity-provider activity, according to CryptoSlate. About $363,000 in payouts entered a queue while the route was unavailable.

That queue illustrates the immediate effect beyond the frozen USDT balance. Users and liquidity providers relying on the TRON path could not complete the affected protocol actions while the vault addresses were restricted.

THORChain’s safety controls cannot remove individual swaps

THORChain’s safety controls let node operators pause an individual chain or the entire protocol, but not selectively remove individual swaps, according to its documentation and THORChain.

The disruption instead originated at the token issuer’s blacklist layer. After the vault addresses appeared unfrozen, trading was expected to resume, technical co-founder Chad Barraford said.
