CoinEx to Cease Operations and Begin an Orderly Wind-Down

CoinEx will cease operating its cryptocurrency exchange and begin an orderly wind-down, with trading operations scheduled to end on December 22, 2026.
The exchange cited declining trading activity, liquidity conditions and the growing cost of maintaining compliant operations as pressures behind the decision. The closure turns CoinEx into the latest centralized trading venue to exit during a year that has already seen several established exchanges either shut down or enter structured wind-down processes.
CoinEx Moves Toward December Closure
CoinEx’s exit comes only days after another substantial reduction in its supported markets. The exchange began delisting 14 cryptoassets on September 10, including MLN, XEM, GENSYN, FIDA, LISTA, RAIL, ACS, 0G, L3, ROAM, SPELL, MITO, PI and PYR.
Deposits and trading for those assets will stop at 08:00 UTC on September 17, while withdrawals remain available until December 17. CoinEx had also started separate delisting rounds earlier in September covering assets including ORAI, ETN, BEAM, QUICK, HFT and POLYX.
The exchange has faced regulatory restrictions in several major markets before the global wind-down. New York authorities forced CoinEx to leave the U.S. market in 2023, while Canadian regulators later obtained orders restricting the platform after finding it was operating without registration. Québec authorities moved to block local access to CoinEx in 2025 and instructed remaining customers to withdraw their assets.
Exchange Closures Have Accelerated in 2026
CoinEx follows BitMEX, which is due to complete its own exchange shutdown on September 23 after 11 years in the derivatives market. BitMEX stopped new registrations and restricted new positions as owner HDR Global Trading moved the platform through its final offboarding period.
AscendEX had already ceased operations on July 1 after citing regulatory, financial and operational constraints. Its closure coincided with the end of the EU’s MiCA transitional period, leaving customers with limited account functions while withdrawals moved through manual review.
BitMart also announced an orderly wind-down in July, initially setting January 31, 2027 as the date for platform operations to cease. The company subsequently appointed White & Case and began evaluating a restructuring that could preserve or restart parts of the business rather than complete the original shutdown plan.
European regulation has added another exit route for exchanges unable or unwilling to secure authorization. ESMA instructed unauthorized crypto service providers to wind down EU services after the final MiCA transition expired on July 1, requiring affected firms to stop onboarding customers and limit activity to orderly offboarding.
CoinEx’s trading platform is scheduled to cease operations on December 22, giving existing users a limited period to close positions and move assets as the exchange completes its wind-down.
