Is Tether Gold Backed by Physical Gold?

Is Tether Gold backed by physical gold? Millions of dollars in trades depend on that question. Tether Gold is a token with the ticker XAUT. It is issued by Tether, the company behind the USDT stablecoin.
Each XAUT token stands for one troy ounce of gold, and it trades on blockchains like Ethereum and TRON. The backing is where the real story starts.
How Does the Backing Work?
Tether says each token links to one fine troy ounce of gold on a London Good Delivery bar.
The gold is allocated, which means specific bars are set aside for token holders. Tether publishes bar serial numbers and weights.
Holders can enter a wallet address on the Tether Gold site to see the bars tied to their tokens. The vault sits in Switzerland, but its location is not public.
Tether also publishes reserve data for its stablecoins, and TechGaged compares how safe stablecoin reserve disclosures look.
Can You Check the Gold Yourself?
Not directly. You can read the reports on Tether’s transparency page. BDO Italia reviews the gold reserves each quarter. These are attestations, not full audits.
An attestation is a snapshot of one moment in time. That is why readers should know that proof of reserves is not proof of solvency.
What The XAUT Chart Shows
At about 10:25 UTC on 13 October 2026, XAUT traded at $4,178.94. That is up 0.6% over seven days.

The BTC pair stood at 0.05001282. The seven-day chart starts near $4,160 on 7 October. Price fell to a low near $4,090 on 8 October.
A sharp rebound followed on 9 October, lifting XAUT back to about $4,180. Price held that level through 11 October.
A peak near $4,200 came on 12 October before a dip to about $4,150. XAUT then bounced back to $4,180 on 13 October. The token follows the spot gold price closely.
What Do Newcomers Often Miss?
Trading XAUT is easy. Taking delivery is hard. Physical redemption usually requires about 430 tokens, which equals one full gold bar. It also needs identity checks, fees, and delivery in Switzerland.
Many holders can sell for cash instead. A token is also not the same as holding a gold bar yourself, and tokenized assets carry hidden risks about what investors own.
Tether Gold makes gold simple to trade on-chain. The metal stays in a Swiss vault, and trust in the reports covers the rest.
