What Satoshi Nakamoto Sent to a Mailing List in 2008

Crypto news today is about one date. On October 31, 2008, Satoshi Nakamoto sent a nine-page paper to a mailing list, and the Bitcoin whitepaper anniversary now hits 18 years.

Satoshi Nakamoto Institute archive

Satoshi sent the email to the Cryptography Mailing List at 18:10 UTC. You can still read it in the Satoshi Nakamoto Institute archive. It pointed to a paper on peer-to-peer electronic cash, built to stop double spending without a bank.

Genesis Block and Hal Finney: How the Network Went Live

The creator mined the first block on January 3, 2009. Its coinbase text quotes a Times headline: “Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks.” The line dates the block and nods to the 2008 financial crisis. Anyone can inspect the genesis block on Blockstream.

Days later, in block 170 on January 12, 2009, Satoshi sent 10 BTC to cryptographer Hal Finney. It is widely seen as the first crypto transaction between two people, and Finney later confirmed the receipt.

Pizza Day and a Quiet Exit: Real Money, Missing Founder

On May 22, 2010, programmer Laszlo Hanyecz paid 10,000 BTC for two pizzas, as his Bitcointalk thread shows. Another user arranged a "Papa John’s" delivery. The coins were worth about $41 then, and the deal is now marked each year as Pizza Day.

Satoshi’s last known forum post came on December 12, 2010. In April 2011, a private email said he had “moved on to other things,” and leadership passed to Gavin Andresen and the community. The creator has not been verifiably heard from since, which keeps him among the biggest crypto mysteries.

Bitcoin Whitepaper Anniversary Milestones: Halvings to ATH

The @AshCrypto post lists what came after the founder left. Two items stand out for investors:

  • January 2024 brought U.S. spot BTC ETFs, approved by the SEC.

  • A government-run Strategic Bitcoin Reserve followed in 2025.

  • AshCrypto Official X Post

Those two moves changed who could hold BTC and who was buying it. Four halvings, in 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024, also cut new supply along the way.

Price Check: BTC Trades 39% Below Its 2025 All-Time High

On this Bitcoin whitepaper anniversary, the X price widget shows BTC near $77,358, down 0.3% on the day, with a market cap of about $1.555T. That sits roughly 39% below the October 2025 peak of $126,198 cited by @AshCrypto. CoinGecko also tracks the record near $126,000.

The Bitcoin whitepaper anniversary shows how far a nine-page idea has traveled.

The Bitcoin whitepaper anniversary is a good reminder that the early story is well documented, while prices and policy move fast. Check the latest crypto news for the next update.
