Japan’s Inflation Signal Matters More To XRP Than The Rate

Dr. Stevenson says the central bank has not made that declaration since adopting the target in 2013.

She cites a Bloomberg survey in which no economists expected an immediate hike, making the bank’s wording, rather than its rate decision alone, the potential surprise.

The transmission mechanism is the yen carry trade: investors borrow in Japan’s low-interest-rate currency to buy higher-returning assets elsewhere. Higher Japanese borrowing costs can squeeze those positions, while a stronger yen makes repayment more expensive for investors holding dollar-denominated assets.

Dr. Stevenson points to August 5, 2024, when Japanese stocks fell more than 12% and crypto also sold off. The Bank of Japan had raised its policy rate to around 0.25% several days earlier.

She presents forced selling from carry-trade unwinds as the central explanation. That is the video’s interpretation, rather than evidence that Japanese policy alone caused the entire decline.

There is another possible channel. Japan holds more than $1 trillion in U.S. Treasuries, according to the episode; more attractive domestic yields could encourage Japanese investors to bring money home. Treasury selling could put upward pressure on U.S. yields, although that outcome is not automatic.

For XRP, Stevenson separates near-term market pressure from longer-term payments activity. A rapid yen appreciation could accompany selling across crypto, regardless of developments specific to XRP.

Her longer-term argument centers on SBI’s involvement with XRP, including payments through SBI Remit and lending services. She suggests that growing blockchain-based transfers between Japan and the United States could create demand for cross-currency settlement.

That remains a potential use case, not a demonstrated link between Japanese rate increases and XRP demand. More stablecoin activity does not necessarily require XRP.
