Bitcoin Flips 5-day High. Is This the Long-Awaited Breakout?

Bitcoin briefly broke above $83,000 for the first time in more than five days, raising hopes of a broader recovery. However, the rally failed to hold, leaving investors questioning whether the breakout has enough momentum to push prices higher.
The move triggered significant liquidations among leveraged traders. More than $188 million in positions were liquidated across the crypto market over four hours, with short positions accounting for approximately 75% of the total. Yet Bitcoin’s subsequent retreat suggests that forcing bearish traders out of their positions may not be enough to sustain an upward move.
Some market participants remain optimistic about further gains. Ash Crypto, for instance, shared a daily chart showing BTC breaking out of a symmetrical triangle following the latest uptick. Other analysts have also welcomed the move, suggesting that Bitcoin’s prolonged consolidation could be coming to an end.
However, the subsequent pullback from the $83,335 high has raised questions about the strength of the breakout.
Bitcoin recorded the second-highest liquidation total among cryptocurrencies during the period, with short positions accounting for more than 80% of its liquidations.
The latest uptick could be part of the broader recovery many investors anticipate this week. Nevertheless, Bitcoin’s inability to sustain trading above $83,000 suggests that the market has yet to establish a convincing bullish trend.
Why Did Bitcoin Surge Above $83K?
The rally coincided with reports of progress in negotiations between the US and Iran, raising hopes of de-escalation in the Middle East. After months of fighting, diplomatic efforts and escalating tensions, reports emerged that both parties had agreed to a framework mediated by Pakistan and two other countries.
According to circulating reports, the proposed framework included favorable terms for both sides. The prospect of reduced disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz also weighed on oil prices, while risk assets, including cryptocurrencies, advanced.
Oil prices reportedly fell by approximately 3%, while the crypto market gained nearly 2%.
The potential easing of geopolitical tensions could improve market sentiment. However, a reported framework does not necessarily mean that hostilities have ended or that shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz will immediately return to pre-conflict levels. The durability of the market’s reaction will depend partly on whether diplomatic progress translates into concrete developments.
Is This the Long-Awaited Breakout?
A sustained reduction in geopolitical tensions could benefit the crypto market through lower energy prices, easing inflationary pressures and improved appetite for risk assets. Conversely, renewed escalation could reverse some of these gains.
However, Tuesday’s rally was not entirely different from other short-lived upticks Bitcoin recorded over the previous seven days. Its significance lies in the price levels it briefly cleared.
Data from CoinGlass showed a liquidation cluster worth more than $310 million around $83,240 before the latest move. Bears had repeatedly defended this level as Bitcoin approached it, but the latest rally pushed the asset through the cluster.
The next notable liquidation concentration was around $83,670. This could create an opportunity for further upside if Bitcoin maintains its momentum, although liquidation clusters do not guarantee that prices will reach the next level.
Meanwhile, a growing concentration of leveraged long positions around $82,150 suggests that traders are positioning for another upward move. However, these positions could become vulnerable if Bitcoin falls back below that area.
A decisive break above $83,670 could open the way for a move toward $86,000, provided there is sufficient buying pressure and limited resistance along the way. Conversely, a sustained decline below $82,000 could weaken the recovery and expose the sub-$80,000 region.
For now, Bitcoin has yet to confirm a sustained breakout. The asset remains vulnerable to another decline, with $80,000 emerging as an important downside level to watch.
ETF Inflows Strengthen the Bullish Case
While the price action remains uncertain, developments in the exchange-traded fund market offer a more encouraging signal.
Investors resumed accumulating US spot Bitcoin ETFs on Monday. The products reportedly recorded combined net inflows of $526 million, their highest daily total in almost 30 days.
Sustained ETF inflows could support Bitcoin’s recovery by reflecting renewed demand for investment exposure to the asset. However, one day of strong inflows is not sufficient to establish a lasting trend. Investors will need to see whether the accumulation continues over the coming sessions.
Will Bitcoin Surge Now?
Beyond ETF activity, on-chain data offers another potential sign that selling pressure is easing.
A recent analysis by IT Tech indicated that investors who had held Bitcoin for six to 12 months had slowed their transfers to exchanges, with only 4.4% of their total holdings reportedly sent to trading platforms.
Lower exchange inflows from this cohort could indicate reduced intentions to sell. A previous analysis also highlighted a slowdown in profit-taking, noting that similar developments had coincided with local market bottoms.
However, declining selling pressure does not automatically translate into rising prices. For Bitcoin to establish a stronger recovery, buyers must absorb the available supply and generate enough spot demand to sustain upward momentum.
This is where the current market structure raises concerns.
Bitcoin’s accumulation trend suggests that larger holders, referred to as humpbacks, remain an important source of selling pressure. Meanwhile, sharks, a smaller large-holder cohort that had led accumulation through September, appear to be reducing their exposure.
If these trends persist, improving ETF inflows and slower selling from some holders may not be enough to drive a sustained rally. A renewed increase in spot buying would strengthen the bullish case.
Bitcoin Remains Rangebound
Despite the latest uptick, Bitcoin remains within its broader consolidation range. Over the past ten days, the asset has traded mostly below $84,000, and Tuesday’s rally failed to establish a sustained breakout from that pattern.

Nevertheless, the moving average convergence divergence (MACD) indicator suggests that bearish momentum may be weakening. The histogram has printed progressively smaller bars over the past three days, a pattern that can precede a bullish crossover.
Although this development could signal improving momentum, it is not a confirmed buy signal. Bitcoin would need to sustain its recovery and overcome nearby resistance to strengthen the bullish outlook.
The coming days could prove pivotal. A decisive move above $83,670, followed by a sustained break toward $84,000 and beyond, would improve the prospects of a retest of $86,000. Conversely, a loss of $82,000 could expose Bitcoin to another decline toward $80,000 or lower.
For now, the market presents a mixed picture. ETF inflows are improving, some holders appear to be slowing their selling, and the MACD histogram points to diminishing bearish momentum. However, the lack of convincing spot buying and the continued consolidation suggest that Bitcoin is not yet out of the woods.
