Key Takeaways

The total crypto market capitalization fell 2.87% over the past 24 hours to about $2.65 trillion, according to CoinMarketCap, and trading volume dropped 7.4% to about $60.6 billion. Bitcoin’s share of the market stands at 60.2% and Ether’s at 10.6%.

Bitcoin slipped below $80,000 for the first time since mid-October. BTC trades near $79,300, down 2.57% on the day, and has broken under its October 15 low of about $79,800, which had held as support all month.

Altcoins are falling harder. Zcash (ZEC) dropped 8.65%, the worst move among the largest tokens, while Cardano, Dogecoin, Chainlink, Solana and Stellar each lost between 5% and 6.5%. Monero (XMR) is the only top-20 coin still up over the week, with a 7-day gain of about 8%.

Today’s Crypto Market Analysis

Saturday’s decline is broad: every one of the 13 large tokens above is down over 24 hours, and only Monero is up over the week. The selling is heaviest outside Bitcoin. Ether lost 4.55% and Solana 5.29%, slipping back under the $100 level that had stopped its declines on October 13, 15 and 18, while Bitcoin fell 2.57% and its dominance edged up to 60.2%.

Bitcoin’s break below $80,000 is the key technical change. The October 15 low near $79,800 had marked the bottom of BTC’s range for more than a week, and Thursday’s rally attempt toward $84,800 failed before the sell-off began. If the level is not recovered quickly, the next major support sits near $75,000, where the September 15 sell-off ended.

Privacy coins remain the most volatile corner of the market. Zcash gave back much of its midweek rally, when it touched about $1,379 on Wednesday, and Monero is down on the day but still the best performer of the past seven days. TRON again held up best among the majors, losing only 0.34%.

Why Is the Crypto Market Moving Today?

The sell-off started in stocks. The Nasdaq Composite fell 2.6% on Thursday, its worst session since June, after Tesla lowered its spending forecast and raised doubts about the AI and data-center investment boom. Crypto followed tech lower, and about $431 million of leveraged positions were liquidated over 24 hours, almost all of them longs, according to CoinGlass.

ETF demand reversed at the same time. US spot Bitcoin ETFs had taken in more than $1 billion over the three sessions to October 21, but recorded $635.6 million of outflows on Thursday, led by $254.1 million from BlackRock’s IBIT and $217.5 million from Fidelity’s FBTC, followed by $137.9 million on Friday. Ether funds keep losing money, which helps explain why ETH is underperforming Bitcoin.

Macro risk is the backdrop. The Federal Reserve meets on October 27 and 28, and traders are cutting exposure before the decision after September’s 3.7% inflation reading revived the case for another hike. What This Means for the Days Ahead

Weekend trading is usually thin, which can exaggerate moves in either direction, and token unlocks for XPL and H are scheduled for October 25. Ethereum’s Glamsterdam upgrade reaches the Hoodi test network on October 26, a few days after Solana switched to its Alpenglow consensus on October 21.

The macro calendar is the main event next week. Robinhood reports on October 27, the Federal Reserve announces its decision on October 28, and October 29 brings US third-quarter GDP, September PCE inflation, the European Central Bank’s decision and quarterly results from Coinbase and Strategy, followed by the Bank of Japan on October 30. A recovery would most likely need Bitcoin to reclaim $80,000 and ETF flows to turn positive again; a further drop toward $75,000 is the bigger risk if the Fed sounds hawkish.
