U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded about $679 million in net outflows from October 5 to October 9, ending the sector’s two-week run of positive weekly flows.
The shift followed about $241 million in net inflows the previous week. Outflows were heaviest on Wednesday, when ETFs lost about $485 million in a single day.
Fidelity and ARK Invest Lead Weekly Outflows
ETF flows swung by roughly $920 million from one week to the next. The shift reflects a sharp reversal in investor demand, with selling pressure concentrated in a handful of major funds.
Fidelity’s FBTC accounted for the largest outflow among major funds, recording about $380.3 million in weekly outflows. ARK Invest’s ARKB followed with approximately $207.2 million.
Grayscale’s GBTC recorded roughly $47.5 million in outflows, while Bitwise’s BITB lost about $45.3 million. BlackRock’s IBIT, by contrast, recorded a small net inflow of approximately $1.1 million, leaving it largely flat for the week.
How Bitcoin ETF Flows Changed Through the Week
The week opened with net outflows. On October 5, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded about $89.8 million in net outflows, equivalent to roughly 1,040 BTC. Although IBIT attracted $69.9 million in inflows, this was more than offset by outflows from FBTC and ARKB.
The following day brought a modest recovery. On October 6, the ETFs recorded about $118.8 million in net inflows, or approximately 1,390 BTC. IBIT led the buying with $122 million in inflows.
That recovery was short-lived. On October 7, net outflows surged to about $484.9 million, equivalent to roughly 5,670 BTC. IBIT recorded $207.7 million in outflows, while FBTC, ARKB and BITB also saw significant sales.
Outflows remained high on October 8, with another $244.1 million leaving the ETFs, or approximately 2,930 BTC. FBTC accounted for about $197.1 million of the day’s outflows.
The week ended with a small return to positive flows. On October 9, the ETFs recorded about $21.1 million in net inflows, equivalent to roughly 258 BTC. IBIT led again, attracting $22.4 million.
ETFs Recorded Net Selling Equivalent to 18 Days of New Supply
In Bitcoin terms, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded approximately 7,992 BTC in net outflows across the five trading sessions from October 5 to October 9.
Bitcoin miners produce roughly 450 BTC per day, adding about 3,150 BTC in new supply over seven days. Against that benchmark, the week’s net ETF outflows were equivalent to roughly 17.8 days of newly mined Bitcoin.
Put another way, the ETFs recorded about 2.5 BTC in net outflows for every 1 BTC newly mined during the week.
This marked a sharp reversal from the previous week, when the ETFs recorded approximately 2,850 BTC in net inflows from September 28 to October 2. That was equivalent to about 6.3 days of newly mined Bitcoin.
Bitcoin Ends the Week Lower as ETF Outflows Rise
Bitcoin opened October 5 at around $86,490 and closed Sunday at approximately $83,679, a decline of about 3.2% over the seven days.
The decline accelerated on Wednesday, when Bitcoin fell from approximately $85,544 to $83,275. The ETFs also recorded their largest daily net outflow of the week, at about $484.9 million.
Selling continued on Thursday, with Bitcoin dropping from around $83,275 to $81,676. ETFs recorded another $244.1 million in net outflows that day.
Bitcoin recovered toward the end of the week, closing Friday near $82,562, Saturday around $82,923, and Sunday at approximately $83,679.
Overall, the week combined negative ETF flows with a decline in Bitcoin’s price. The largest ETF outflows coincided with some of the week’s sharpest price declines, although the figures alone do not establish that ETF selling caused the price movements.
