Dogecoin trades at $0.0789 on Tuesday midday, or €0.0704. Over twelve months that is a loss of 60.6 percent, and the coin now ranks only 12th by market value. The figures come from CoinGecko, retrieved at 12:47 p.m. German time.

Dogecoin loses 60.6 percent in twelve months and slips to 12th place

Anyone who bought a year ago is sitting on a loss of almost two thirds. The market value of Dogecoin stands at $12.34 billion, or €11.01 billion, with 156.40 billion coins in circulation. The price is 89.2 percent below its record of $0.7316 set on 7 May 2021.

The number only becomes interesting in comparison. Of the eight large assets we track daily, only Polkadot has lost more over twelve months:

CoinTwelve monthsRank by market value
Polkadotminus 63.1 percent51
Dogecoinminus 60.6 percent12
Shiba Inuminus 51.5 percent36
XRPminus 47.7 percent5
Solanaminus 46.1 percent7
Ethereumminus 41.1 percent2
Chainlinkminus 36.3 percent16
Bitcoinminus 26.7 percent1

Dogecoin has therefore lost 2.27 times as much as Bitcoin over the same period. That is the real finding of the day, and it cannot be explained by the mood of a single week.

The slide sits in the past two weeks, not in the whole month

The shorter windows say something the annual figure hides. Over 30 days Dogecoin is down 6.8 percent, but over 14 days it is down 16.8 percent. The two-week loss is therefore 2.46 times the monthly loss.

Mathematically there is only one way to reconcile that: the first half of the month ran clearly positive, and the entire decline bunched up afterwards. The monthly figure thus conceals a break that only set in at the start of October. Over seven days the loss comes to 6.4 percent.

Tuesday itself is quiet. Between the daily high of $0.079957 and the daily low of $0.078486 there is a span of 1.87 percent, and over 24 hours the coin is down 0.3 percent. Turnover amounts to $345.29 million.

Little has changed in the turnover picture since 19 October

Yesterday we reported here that large addresses took on around 600 million DOGE while daily turnover halved. Little has changed since: at $345.29 million turnover remains at that depressed level, and the price has barely given way since then.

The longer comparison is clearer. In our article of 14 October, Dogecoin stood at $0.0845. That has since become $0.0789, a decline of 6.6 percent in six days. The buying by large addresses has therefore not carried the price during that time.

The anniversary of your purchase weighs more than today’s price

For an investor in Germany, more hangs on that date than on the next price level. Under Section 23 of the German Income Tax Act (EStG), the sale of crypto assets is a private disposal transaction as long as no more than one year lies between acquisition and sale. A private disposal transaction is a sale out of private assets whose gain becomes taxable only within that period.

Two cases follow from this. If you sell within the twelve months at a profit, that gain counts towards your taxable income and is charged at your personal tax rate. An exemption threshold of €1,000 per calendar year applies, covering all private disposal transactions together. An exemption threshold is not an allowance: if you come in at €1,001, the entire amount is taxable, not just the one euro.

If you sell after the twelve months have elapsed, the transaction falls outside Section 23. The gain stays tax free, and without any upper limit. Whether this rule survives is politically open. We track the current state of the reform debate on our standing page about the crypto holding period.

After twelve months a loss is no longer deductible

Here lies the point many holders overlook, and with a loss of 60.6 percent it concerns a good many portfolios. Tax freedom after one year cuts both ways. If the sale is no longer a private disposal transaction, then neither is a loss from it one the tax office will recognise.

Within the one-year window things look different. A loss from a private disposal transaction can be offset against gains from other private disposal transactions in the same year, for instance a gain on another coin. If a loss remains after that, it can be carried back to the previous year or forward into coming years, where again it counts only against the same type of income. It cannot be offset against gains on shares, against interest or against your salary.

That produces a constellation a glance at the chart does not show: anyone holding a position shortly before its anniversary and deep in the red has precisely until that day to claim the loss for tax purposes at all. After that the door is shut. Which of your positions fall due when is shown by clean documentation of your purchases; we have set the providers side by side in our comparison of crypto tax tools.

This is a description of the legal position, not tax advice. What applies in your case depends on your acquisition dates, your other income and on special situations such as staking or swaps. Those questions belong with a tax adviser.

The acquisition dates decide the tax, not the price of the day.

The deadline is counted under Section 188 BGB, not by gut feeling

The one-year period is not counted by feel. What governs is Section 188 of the German Civil Code (BGB): a period determined in years ends on the day of the final year that precedes the day corresponding by its name to the starting day. The day of acquisition itself does not count.

In practice that means: if you bought your DOGE on 20 October 2025, the one-year period expires at the end of 20 October 2026. A sale on this Tuesday therefore still falls within the period, a sale from Wednesday onwards falls outside it. A single day thus decides whether a gain stays tax free and whether a loss still counts.

There is also the allocation of individual purchases. If you bought several times, the first in, first out method governs the order, so the holding bought first counts as sold first. The tax authorities apply a wallet-by-wallet view, so the period runs per wallet and not across all holdings. Anyone holding on several exchanges and in several wallets calculates each location separately.

Where the 60 percent comes from: 5.256 billion new DOGE a year

Part of the annual loss sits in the design of the blockchain itself. Dogecoin pays out 10,000 DOGE per block to miners, with a block time of around one minute. That works out at roughly 5.256 billion new coins a year. Measured against the circulating 156.40 billion, that is 3.36 percent of annual dilution.

The difference from Bitcoin lies in its permanence. With Bitcoin the payout halves roughly every four years, so new issuance tends towards zero. With Dogecoin the block reward has been fixed since 2014, there is no halving and no cap on the circulating supply. How the network pays its miners, and what share the fees contribute, we broke down in detail on 18 October.

For the annual balance that means: 3.36 percent of additional supply has to be absorbed just for the price to stand still. The remaining good 57 percentage points of the annual loss fall on the demand side. Supply therefore explains part of the move, but not the larger part.

These levels cap the price above and below

To the downside, the daily low of $0.078486 is the next documented level. That low held on Tuesday and lies just 0.5 percent below the current price. Beneath it, our measurement of 14 October points to the February low, which counted as the next catchment line at the time.

To the upside there is first the daily high of $0.079957, that is the round $0.08 mark. Above it lies the $0.0845 level at which Dogecoin traded on 14 October. A return there would correspond to a gain of 7.1 percent.

The narrow daily range of 1.87 percent says more about turnover than about direction. At $345.29 million of daily turnover against a market value of $12.34 billion, around 2.8 percent of the stock changes hands per day. In an order book that thin, individual larger orders shift the levels faster than in a liquid market.

Our assessment of the situation at Dogecoin

In the view of the editorial team, the annual loss of 60.6 percent is the more robust signal than the quiet daily range. Three figures support that: over twelve months Dogecoin trails six of the seven assets compared, the blockchain generates 3.36 percent of additional supply every year without a halving, and the decline has condensed over the past 14 days into 2.46 times the monthly figure.

Against it stands the fact that the market is not yet turning the news into panic. Over 24 hours the coin is down only 0.3 percent, it holds 12th place by market value, and large addresses have recently been buying rather than selling. Anyone deriving a turnaround from that, however, needs a figure nobody can produce today.

What can be settled today is the calendar question. It hangs on your own acquisition dates, and for many portfolios it carries a larger amount than the next five percent of price movement. A total loss remains possible with any crypto asset.

Dogecoin and the holding period: the anniversary beats any price level

  1. Pull together your acquisition dates. For every wallet and every exchange, gather the purchase dates and quantities and mark every position whose anniversary falls in the coming weeks. Which providers document this automatically is set out in the comparison of crypto tax tools.
  2. Review venue and costs. At 2.8 percent of daily turnover, the spread weighs more heavily than the order fee. Which venues trade under regulation in Germany and what they cost is shown by the exchange comparison.
  3. Keep an eye on the legal position. The one-year period applies, a reform is under discussion and has not been adopted. We track the state of play on the page about the crypto holding period.
