16.43 million dollars in, 13.38 million left: what is behind the Dogecoin fund gap

The US spot funds holding Dogecoin have taken in $16.43 million of net inflows since they launched. Their combined net assets stood at $13.38 million on October 20. Between the two figures sits $3.05 million, or 18.6 percent of the money paid in. That gap is no accounting error but the arithmetic of the price, and it explains better than any chart level why the fund wrapper has moved nothing at DOGE so far. For investors in Germany a second layer comes into play: what sits in a German brokerage account is usually not this fund at all.
The US spot fund figures as of October 20
Data provider TokenPost reports a daily flow of zero dollars for the US Dogecoin spot ETFs at the October 20 close. Cumulative net inflows since launch stand there at $16.43 million, net assets at $13.38 million and the day's trading turnover at $513,319.
The data providers diverge on cumulative inflows. FXStreet cited roughly $15 million cumulative and just under $14 million of net assets on October 15, and TokenPost itself reported a peak of $15.27 million at the end of September. A defensible range is therefore $15.0 million to $16.43 million paid in and $13.38 million to $14 million of assets. Nothing is smoothed over here: all three readings point the same way, with assets below the money paid in.
A net flow of zero means that no shares were created or redeemed that day. October has seen more than one such day. From October 1 to October 9 the funds recorded seven consecutive trading days without a single dollar of movement, on assets of around $14.9 million at the time. Outflows followed: $399,460 on Monday, October 12, and $138,565 the day after.
Why net assets sit below the money paid in
A spot ETF buys the coin itself with every dollar paid in and holds it. If the price falls, fund assets fall in the same proportion, regardless of whether anyone enters or exits. The $16.43 million is a historical sum of all inflows at the prices of their respective days. The $13.38 million is today's market value of the coins left from them.
Converted into units, around 163.6 million DOGE stand behind the $13.38 million at the current price. The Dogecoin network creates about 13.82 million new DOGE a day, by our figures from October 18. Total assets across all US spot products thus amount to just under twelve days of new issuance. A fund of this size cannot support a price, it can only track one.
The management fee adds to that. The Grayscale Dogecoin Trust ETF charges 0.35 percent a year. On $13.38 million of assets that is around $46,800 annually taken out of the wrapper, even in a month without any movement. Leveraged products sit well above it: the issuer quotes 1.89 percent for the 21Shares 2x Long Dogecoin ETF.
$513,319 of fund turnover against $475 million on the spot market
The second figure that usually gets lost in the flow reports is the funds' own trading turnover. The $513,319 on October 20 compares with spot turnover of $475.3 million that Dogecoin showed across all venues at midday on Wednesday. The ratio is 0.108 percent, roughly one dollar in the funds for every $926 on the spot market.
Holdings tell the same story: $13.38 million of fund assets against a DOGE market value of $12.79 billion is 0.105 percent. Reading fund flows as the explanation for daily moves in Dogecoin measures a fraction of a percent and calls it a cause. At Bitcoin, where the spot ETFs hold double-digit billions, that reading holds; at DOGE it does not.

What has changed since October 17
On October 17 we reported that Bitwise will wind down its Dogecoin fund for cash on October 22. That date is tomorrow. Two things have shifted since. First, the price stood at $0.080845 on October 17 and at $0.08177 at midday on Wednesday, 1.14 percent higher. The wind-down announcement did not push the price down over those four days. Second, the announced step has turned into a measurable zero in the daily flows: a fund winding down creates no new shares.
For the figures above, that means cumulative inflows in one part of the market are fixed for good from October 22. A cash payout reduces the product group's net assets without showing up as an outflow in the daily statistics, because the fund itself disappears. To follow the series from Thursday, watch the number of products reported, not only the flow value.
Dogecoin ETF or ETN: what German portfolios hold
The products behind the flow reports are spot ETFs approved in the United States. For retail investors in Germany they are effectively out of reach: without a key information document under the PRIIPs regulation a product may not be distributed to retail clients here, and the US issuers do not file those documents. Anything carrying Dogecoin in its name in a German brokerage account is therefore almost always a different construction.
As a rule it is an ETN or ETP, an exchange-traded debt security that tracks the price and is usually backed by coins. In law that is a claim against the issuer, not a fund unit with segregated assets. Which wrappers exist here at all, and what to look for when buying, is set out in our overview of crypto ETFs in Germany.
The first step is mundane and still gets skipped: look up the security identification number of your own position and read in the key information document whether it says ETN, ETP or certificate. Everything else follows from that, the tax included.
Holding period under section 23 EStG against flat-rate withholding tax
Directly held coins fall under section 23 of the German Income Tax Act: a sale within one year is a private disposal, gains are taxed at the personal income tax rate, and an exemption threshold of 1,000 euros a year applies. After twelve months of holding, the gain is tax free. Where plans to change that deadline stand is something we track continuously under the status of the crypto holding period.
For a debt security the classification differs and is contested case by case. As a capital claim it falls under section 20 of the German Income Tax Act, meaning 25 percent flat-rate withholding tax plus the solidarity surcharge, with no holding period, but with the 1,000 euro saver's allowance and the option of offsetting losses against other investment income. For physically backed products with a delivery claim, some tax advisers argue for treatment under section 23. There is no blanket answer, and claiming something universally valid here goes beyond the legal position.
The difference matters right now. Dogecoin trades 88.8 percent below its all-time high of $0.7316. An investor in the red holds an offsettable loss within investment income in the case of a debt security, while a directly held coin past the one-year mark produces neither a taxable gain nor a usable loss. The price at midday on Wednesday and the levels below it
Dogecoin stood at $0.08177 at midday on Wednesday, 3.75 percent above its value 24 hours earlier. The daily range ran from $0.078967 to $0.082241, a spread of 4.15 percent between low and high. Market value is $12.79 billion and daily turnover $475.3 million, which turns over 3.72 percent of the holdings in a single day. At Bitcoin the figure is 1.68 percent at the same moment.
Something has happened to the level we discussed on October 14. The price stood at $0.084464 then, 5.6 percent above the February low of $0.0800, the daily low of February 6. That line has since broken intraday: the daily low of $0.078967 was 1.29 percent below it. The price has taken it back, standing 2.21 percent above the February low at midday on Wednesday. A line that had held for eight months has become one that was pierced once and then reclaimed.
To the upside the daily high of $0.082241 is the next reference point, to the downside today's daily low remains. Against October 14 the price stands 3.19 percent lower, even with the wind-down report in between.
Our assessment of the role of the fund wrapper
In the view of our editorial team, the significance of the Dogecoin spot funds is overstated in both directions. Three figures from this article speak for that: 0.105 percent of market value, 0.108 percent of daily turnover and seven consecutive trading days without movement. A product group of this size explains no daily move of 4 percent. One argument speaks against it that we take seriously: the wrappers create access for asset managers that may not hold coins in custody, and that access can later bring in money on a scale not visible today. The $3.05 million gap between inflows and assets is no verdict on the products, it is a consequence of the price since they launched. None of this amounts to a buy or sell recommendation; with crypto assets, a total loss is possible.
Dogecoin funds: $3.05 million missing before October 22
- Look up the security identification number of the Dogecoin position in your own portfolio and read in the key information document whether it says ETN, ETP or certificate. The acquisition dates are documented by the tools in our comparison of crypto tax software and portfolio trackers.
- For directly held coins, note the purchase date of each tranche and work out when the one-year deadline expires. We track the current state of the law under crypto holding period.
- Before buying directly, compare the total cost of spread and fee with the 0.35 percent management fee of the fund wrapper. The terms of the trading venues are in our overview of the best crypto exchanges.
