Hanwha Selects Chainlink for Global Tokenized Assets Ahead of Korea’s 2027 Rules

South Korea’s Hanwha Investment & Securities has selected Chainlink’s data and cross-chain infrastructure as the foundation for a planned global tokenization platform, putting a major securities firm behind technology intended to connect traditionally issued assets with multiple blockchain networks.

According to the October 29 joint announcement, Hanwha will use Chainlink data standards and the Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) to support asset pricing, net asset value information and the movement of tokenized assets across networks. The companies are also establishing a working group to define institutional collateral use cases and compliance arrangements.

The announcement is an adoption and partnership agreement, not evidence that a named investment fund has already issued tokens, completed cross-border settlement or reached a particular volume. Hanwha says it is discussing product opportunities with global asset managers and issuers.

Connecting assets is harder than creating tokens

Issuing a blockchain representation of a security is only the first part of tokenization. The token’s legal rights, underlying asset valuation, transfer restrictions and redemption process must remain enforceable across institutions and jurisdictions. A bond or fund token that moves between blockchains may require a way to ensure that only one authoritative claim to the underlying asset exists at any time.

Hanwha’s planned architecture addresses the infrastructure layer. Chainlink’s oracle services can deliver pricing and net asset values to onchain applications, while CCIP provides an interoperability mechanism for transferring supported assets and messages between networks. Neither service independently settles the legal question of who owns the underlying security.

The firms intend to examine methods for validating tokenized real-world assets as collateral. That raises additional issues: independent valuation, daily liquidity, permissioned liquidation rights and what happens if a borrower defaults while the original asset is subject to trading restrictions.

South Korea is preparing a framework for tokenized securities expected in February 2027, the partnership announcement says. Institutional readiness should therefore be judged against enacted local rules and the products actually approved, rather than assuming the agreement itself confers regulatory authorization.

What the partnership does and does not prove

Hanwha’s involvement suggests that established securities intermediaries see practical demand for distributing assets across blockchain venues, especially for use as collateral or in financial workflows. But the economic case requires evidence that investors gain access they could not previously obtain, that settlement costs fall or that liquidity improves beyond what existing custodians and clearinghouses offer.

A platform that uses familiar blockchain standards may be technically interoperable without permitting free transfer of regulated securities. Compliance filters and transfer controls could make real-world usage more constrained than the underlying protocol supports.

The next test is a disclosed issuance or live integration with defined eligible investors, custody providers, supported networks and asset-redemption mechanics. Until then, this is a concrete infrastructure decision and working relationship, not a completed migration of Korean securities onto public blockchains.
