Bitcoin Price Falls After Hot PPI — Can $80K Hold?

bitcoin main

Bitcoin traded near $80,582 at 12:33 UTC (08:33 ET), after the U.S. Producer Price Index for September rose 1.3% month over month and 6.3% year over year, well above the 0.6% and 5.5% consensus. The monthly reading was the largest advance since March 2022, and BTC slipped roughly 0.4% in the first three minutes after the 08:30 ET release. The move adds to a decline that was already underway before the data.

Summary

  • U.S. headline PPI: 1.3% MoM / 6.3% YoY, versus 0.6% / 5.5% expected.
  • Less food, energy and trade services: 0.5% MoM / 5.0% YoY; August was revised up (0.4% to 0.5% MoM, 5.4% to 5.6% YoY).
  • Bitcoin moved from about $80,925 at 08:30 ET to $80,582 at publication, after already trading down roughly 2.9% on the day.
  • The nearest large liquidation concentrations sit below $80,000 and near the day’s low around $80,470; these are liquidity zones, not guaranteed price targets.

PPI actual versus forecast

September 2026 PPI measure Actual Consensus Previous Revised previous
Final demand, MoM 1.3% 0.6% 0.4% 0.5%
Final demand, YoY 6.3% 5.5% 5.4% 5.6%
Less food, energy and trade services, MoM 0.5% — 0.3% 0.3%
Less food, energy and trade services, YoY 5.0% — 4.7% 4.8%
Goods 2.6% — 1.1% prior 1.1%
Services 0.8% — 0.1% prior 0.2%

The Bureau of Labor Statistics said energy accounted for most of the surge: final demand energy jumped 10.8%, gasoline 20.3% and diesel fuel 21.0%. Half of the September increase in final demand goods traced to gasoline alone. Producer prices can pass through to consumer inflation, but the relationship is neither immediate nor one-to-one — companies can absorb costs in margins or pass them through with a delay.

Bitcoin price reaction after PPI

Market snapshot BTC price Change from 08:30 ET
Pre-release (~11:58 UTC snapshot) $80,975 —
08:30 ET (release) $80,925 —
+2 min (08:32 ET) $80,645 -0.35%
+3 min (08:32:45 ET) $80,582 -0.42%

Chart: the table above records BTC/USD (Coinbase spot) around the 08:30 ET release. A live BTC/USD reaction chart is available on TradingView BTC/USD; the 08:30 ET release sits roughly 15 minutes into the intraday window shown here. The price reaction is a correlation, not proof that PPI was the sole cause.

Bitcoin entered the release already under pressure. Before the data, BTC traded around $80,975, down approximately 2.9% on the day, with an intraday range of roughly $80,470–$83,791. That pre-existing decline means the immediate PPI reaction must be separated from selling already underway.

For related context, see BlockchainReporter’s September CPI market analysis and its earlier breakdown of Bitcoin falling below $83,000.

What the CoinGlass liquidation map shows

The full CoinGlass Bitcoin liquidation heatmap is available at CoinGlass Liquidation Map. Below the current price, the largest leveraged long-liquidation concentrations sit near the day’s low around $80,470 and just under the $80,000 round level; above price, short-liquidations cluster near $81,000. These are estimates of where leveraged positions may be forced out — they are not guaranteed support or resistance.

Brighter zones indicate estimated concentrations of leveraged positions that may be liquidated if price reaches them; they are not guaranteed price targets. Long-liquidation concentrations below price are distinct from short-liquidation concentrations above it.

Why PPI matters for Bitcoin

PPI can affect Bitcoin through the interest-rate channel:

  1. A hotter report can raise expectations for tighter Federal Reserve policy.
  2. Higher expected rates can lift Treasury yields and the dollar.
  3. Higher risk-free yields can pressure high-volatility assets.
  4. Existing leverage can amplify the move through liquidations.

This is a mechanism, not proof of single-cause attribution.

Yesterday’s September CPI report had already shown hotter consumer inflation. Today’s PPI tests whether price pressure also remains elevated upstream at the producer level. A hot CPI/PPI combination strengthens the case for restrictive policy.

The cross-asset reaction

Ethereum $2,350 $2,346 Lower

Can $80K hold?

The first test is not whether Bitcoin touches a round number, but whether it can hold the day’s low and reclaim lost structure after the initial volatility.

  • Immediate support: $80,470 (the pre-release intraday low).
  • Psychological level: $80,000.
  • Lower liquidation cluster: just under $80,000.
  • First reclaim level: $80,975 (the pre-release price).
  • Bearish invalidation: a sustained close below $80,000 on expanding spot volume.
  • Bullish invalidation: a reclaim of $80,975 while yields and the dollar retreat.

The first five minutes after a macro release are often noisy. The market’s 30–60 minute interpretation matters more than the initial spike.

ETF flows remain a separate demand signal

The macro reaction should not be confused with institutional fund flows. BlockchainReporter recently examined how Bitcoin held up despite heavy spot-ETF outflows. A negative PPI reaction plus persistent ETF outflows would combine two different pressures; a positive ETF session could provide counterevidence.

What would invalidate the first reaction?

The bearish interpretation weakens if

  • BTC reclaims $80,975 and holds it;
  • Treasury yields and the dollar reverse their post-PPI move;
  • the selloff occurs mostly through derivatives while spot selling remains limited;
  • upper liquidation clusters become more relevant than lower ones.

The bullish interpretation weakens if

  • BTC fails to hold the day’s low;
  • upward revisions to prior months extend the hot inflation picture;
  • yields keep rising;
  • spot volume confirms selling below $80,470.

What traders should watch next

  • Bitcoin at $80,470 / $80,000
  • CoinGlass liquidation clusters
  • U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF flows
  • Treasury yields and the dollar
  • The next Federal Reserve policy meeting

BlockchainReporter analysis

The most useful conclusion is not that PPI “caused” every Bitcoin move. The report changed one part of the macro evidence while BTC was already trading in a weak structure. A 1.3% monthly PPI print — more than double the 0.6% consensus and the hottest since March 2022 — strengthens the restrictive-policy case at a moment when Bitcoin is already under pressure. The quality of the post-release move depends on whether spot volume, yields, ETF demand and leveraged positioning confirm one another.

A single hot number can move price quickly. A durable trend requires follow-through.
