Summary
- Stellar’s Project Thruput achieved 7.02 million payments per second across eight machines, demonstrating nearly sixfold growth in benchmark execution capacity.
- The execution model processes transactions accessing shared blockchain data simultaneously, allowing validators to expand computing capacity without dividing blockchain state.
- Project Thruput eliminates transaction fees while introducing token-based scheduling, with developers gaining access to FutureNet testing and technical documentation.
The Stellar Development Foundation introduced Project Thruput on October 28, reporting execution capacity exceeding seven million payments per second in benchmarks.
According to the foundation, the technology allows transactions accessing identical blockchain data to execute simultaneously across multiple machines. Project Thruput currently operates on FutureNet, with public code and benchmarks available for developers.
Testing showed execution capacity rising from 1.18 million payments per second on one machine to 7.02 million across eight machines. That represents nearly sixfold growth within a single validator, not network throughput.

Stellar Project Thruput Introduces Parallel Execution Across Multiple Machines
Project Thruput changes how validators process shared account data, removing the sequential execution requirements that typically limit blockchain hardware scaling. Under Stellar’s proposed model, transactions execute independently against the same ledger snapshot, while the system combines compatible changes and enforces restrictions.
For example, multiple payments can update one account without overspending, while developers can establish withdrawal limits across transactions within a block. Validators distribute execution across multiple machines without dividing blockchain state into separate shards, allowing applications to expand computing capacity without splitting data.
Stellar tested RV32 ERC-20 transfers involving only 100 accounts to create contention, measuring execution, signature verification, and block processing across three AWS runs. These benchmarks measured the core execution engine rather than complete network throughput, which involves additional infrastructure and transaction processing requirements.
Stellar Project Thruput Removes Transaction Fees and Introduces Token-Based Scheduling
The project also eliminates individual transaction fees, removing gas charges for micropayments and calculations. Gas measurements remain in place to cap computation.
When demand exceeds available processing capacity, scheduling allocations depend on accounts’ unlocked native-token balances. Scheduling does not spend those tokens without paid priority. Meanwhile, storing blockchain data locks part of an account’s token balance until that data is removed.
Stellar has invited developers to examine the published materials and test the execution model on FutureNet. The foundation also released technical documentation explaining how compatible transactions share ledger state without requiring sequential execution. Project Thruput remains a technology preview, and benchmarks exclude complete network throughput.
