Aave Labs Acquires Avon Team to Bring Fixed-Rate Loans Into DeFi

Aave Labs has acquired the team and technology behind Avon, a developer focused on fixed- and floating-rate onchain loans, as the DeFi lending company pushes toward more predictable borrowing costs. Announced on November 6, the acquisition is a bet that products familiar to borrowers in traditional finance can make decentralized lending useful to a wider audience.
What the Avon acquisition adds
Aave said Avon’s technology includes lending-market design and an onchain order-book approach, alongside work on interest-rate pricing and risk isolation. Unlike the variable rates commonly associated with decentralized lending pools, fixed-rate products give borrowers greater certainty about financing costs for a defined period, though the final terms and risk controls depend on how a protocol implements them.
Prince Sinha and Ayush Kaul are joining the Aave Labs engineering team, while Omar el-Ashaal is moving into business development. The company said the incoming group will initially focus on developing fixed-rate lending capabilities and expanding the lending network’s product options. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
In its official announcement, Aave described a network with more than $33 billion in deposits and $13 billion in active loans. Those figures are the company’s point-in-time claims and can move materially as asset prices and user positions change. They nevertheless help explain why a targeted acquisition can be consequential: even a narrow product improvement can potentially reach a substantial existing network.
Why fixed-rate loans matter for onchain finance
Variable lending rates can respond quickly to supply and demand. That is useful for market efficiency but less attractive for borrowers who must budget repayments or match a predictable stream of business income. Fixed rates can offer more stability, yet they introduce separate challenges in pricing, duration matching and liquidity management.
An onchain order book may make it easier to match counterparties at explicit rates and terms. It does not eliminate the possibility of liquidations, collateral shortfalls or smart-contract defects. Users will still need to understand collateral ratios, liquidation mechanics and what happens if market conditions change before a loan matures.
For Aave, the strategic question is whether fixed-rate borrowing can be introduced without fragmenting liquidity or undermining the safeguards that support existing markets. The acquisition provides a team and intellectual property; it is not, by itself, an announcement that a finished fixed-rate borrowing product is available to every user.
The move follows other lending infrastructure changes. TechGaged recently covered Aave V4’s deposit growth and externally curated markets, developments that show how the network’s model is expanding beyond a single standardized lending pool.
