Ethereum Upgrades Timeline: Past and Future Changes
Ethereum doesn't ship big releases the way a phone app does. It changes in named steps, one hard fork at a time, and each step leaves a mark.
Following the Ethereum upgrades timeline is the easiest way to see how the network got from Ethereum proof-of-work to where it stands today.
The Ethereum-upgrades timeline runs from the Merge in September 2022 through Shapella, Dencun, Pectra, and Fusaka in December 2025.
The next planned upgrades are Glamsterdam, targeted for Q4 2026, and Hegotá, listed for 2027. Both depend on development going to plan.
Status labels used below:
Confirmed: stated on ethereum.org
Reported: stated by secondary sources

What Is the Ethereum Upgrade Timeline Look like what?
Upgrade | Date (UTC) | Main change |
Paris | Sep 2022 | Moved Ethereum from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake |
Shapella | Apr 2023 | Enabled staking withdrawals |
Dencun | Mar 2024 | Added data blobs to lower layer 2 fees. |
Pectra | May 2025 | Raised validator balance limit, added smart-account features |
Fusaka | Dec 2025 | Listed on ethereum.org; its changes aren't described there. |
Every date comes from the official Ethereum history page.
Why Did The Merge Matter So Much?
It was the biggest single step in the Ethereum upgrades timeline. The Merge, listed as Paris, moved Ethereum from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake, and it kicked in once the network hit a set difficulty level. Bellatrix, a few days earlier, had gotten the consensus clients ready for it.
How Did Shapella and Dencun Shape the Ethereum Upgrades Timeline?
Shapella let stakers pull their funds out, which had been locked since staking began.
That opened the door to a wider range of apps built around staked assets, and the Best Ethereum DeFi Platforms guide shows what some of those look like.
Dencun came next and introduced Proto-Danksharding, which adds data "blobs" designed to cut layer 2 rollup fees.

What Did Pectra and Fusaka Add to the Ethereum Upgrades Timeline?
Pectra raised the maximum balance per validator to 2048 and let validators be exited from execution accounts.
It also let regular accounts run smart-contract-like code. Fusaka followed, and the roadmap says the default gas limit has risen to 60M since then. The history page doesn't describe Fusaka's other changes, so none are claimed here.

What Comes Next in the Ethereum Upgrades Timeline?
Two upgrades are listed as in development:
Glamsterdam (Q4 2026): enshrined proposer-builder separation, which lets validators outsource block building without outside software, plus block-level access lists to make gas costs more predictable
Hegotá (2027): inclusion lists, so a committee can make sure valid transactions get included, plus frame transactions that let accounts set their own validity rules
The roadmap itself admits that Hegotá's scope isn't final and that timing is hard to predict.
Whether Glamsterdam has reached mainnet is not verified here, so check ethereum.org/roadmap for the current status.

Does an Upgrade Move the ETH Price?
Not in any dependable way. An Ethereum upgrades timeline describes technical changes, and price depends on a lot more, including the plain mood.
The Ethereum FOMO Surges piece is a good example of how sentiment can swing around market events instead of protocol changes.
Risks and Limitations of the Ethereum Upgrades Timeline
Target dates slip, and the roadmap says so itself
Upgrade goals aren't the same as results
Scope can change before launch, as Hegotá's page admits
Layer 2 networks and apps may need updates after each fork
Some benefits, like post-quantum security, may be years away
How Can You Judge an Upgrade Claim?
Before trusting any Ethereum upgrades timeline you read, ask four things:
Does it cite ethereum.org or another official source?
Does it separate a target date from an actual activation?
Does it say what an upgrade did, not only what it promised?
Is the date recent, or is it from an old roadmap?
Conclusion
The Ethereum upgrades timeline shows steady, staged change rather than one dramatic leap. The Merge, Dencun, and Pectra are done.
Glamsterdam and Hegotá are plans, and plans can move. Read the official pages for the latest before relying on any date.
