Long vs short: what's the difference?

The difference between a long vs short position is simply the direction of the bet: a long makes money when the price rises, a short makes money when it falls. The long/short ratio compares how much of a market sits on each side, so reading longs vs shorts is a way of measuring where leveraged conviction is concentrated — above 1.00, or a long share above 50%, leans bullish, and below that it leans bearish.

Aggregate short positioning is the crypto equivalent of short interest in equities: it says how much of the market is betting against the price, not whether that bet is right. A crowded side matters most when price moves against it, which is why positioning is usually read alongside long and short liquidation data.

How to read the crypto long/short ratio

The long/short ratio compares the number of traders, or the volume of trades, positioned for a price rise against those positioned for a fall on a perpetual futures market. A ratio above 1.00 means longs outnumber shorts; below 1.00, shorts dominate. Because every contract has a counterparty, the ratio never says who is right — it says where leveraged conviction sits.

CoinStats tracks four views. The taker buy/sell ratio measures market orders that lifted the ask against those that hit the bid, aggregated across 22 exchanges — the fastest read on momentum. The accounts ratio counts long versus short accounts on a venue, which mostly reflects retail traders. The top-trader account and position ratios look only at the largest accounts, by count and by actual position size respectively, so they show where whales lean.

The whale vs retail bias divides the top-trader position ratio by the accounts ratio. When whales are far longer than retail the bias reads bullish; when they lean the other way it reads bearish. Extremes in either direction have historically preceded sharp moves as the crowded side is squeezed.

Data covers Binance, OKX, Bybit and Gate USDT-margined perpetuals at 4-hour granularity, with daily and weekly views for longer horizons. Venue ratios cover the top 50 coins by derivatives activity; taker buy/sell volume covers the top 100.

How to read futures positioning data.

What is the crypto long/short ratio?

It is the proportion of long positions to short positions on a perpetual futures market, either by number of accounts or by traded volume. A value of 1.00 means longs and shorts are balanced; 1.50 means three longs for every two shorts. See the Bitcoin and Ethereum pages for the underlying spot markets.

What is the taker buy/sell ratio?

Taker buy volume is the value of market orders that bought at the ask; taker sell volume is the value that sold at the bid. Their ratio shows which side was more aggressive over the window. CoinStats aggregates it across 22 exchanges and shows it for 4h, 12h and 24h windows.

What is the accounts long/short ratio?

The share of accounts on an exchange holding a net long position versus a net short one. Because it counts accounts rather than size, it is dominated by retail traders and is often read as a contrarian indicator.

How do top trader account and position ratios differ?

Both look only at the largest traders on a venue. The account ratio counts how many of them are long versus short; the position ratio weighs them by the size of their open positions, so a few very large books move it more. A gap between the two means the biggest whales disagree with the rest of the top tier.

What does whale vs retail bias mean?

It is the top-trader position ratio divided by the accounts ratio. Above roughly 1.15 whales lean longer than retail (bullish bias); below roughly 0.87 they lean shorter (bearish bias). The labels use the same thresholds everywhere on the page.

How often is the data updated?

Venue ratios and the coins table refresh every 4 hours; the Bitcoin and Ethereum taker windows refresh every 15 minutes. Compare the positioning here with funding rates and liquidations for a fuller derivatives picture, or browse crypto exchanges for venue-level data.

Are people currently shorting Bitcoin?

Yes, and shorts are the larger side right now: over the last 4 hours 51.6% of Bitcoin perpetual futures taker volume was selling and 48.4% was buying, and the accounts long/short ratio on Binance is 1.78. Every short is matched by a long, so the split shows where leveraged conviction sits rather than who is right.
