More ETH Could Be Locked Away as Institutional Staking Access Expands

Ethereum is trading near $2,432, down 5.1% over the past seven days. While short-term price action remains weak, a new development on the institutional side could gradually reduce the amount of ETH readily available for trading.
Interactive Brokers Opens the Door
Interactive Brokers has introduced Ethereum staking for eligible clients, with automated rewards compounding.
The service allows qualifying customers to stake ETH through their brokerage accounts and reinvest rewards without managing the process manually.
This expands staking access beyond crypto-native platforms and specialized custodians.
By integrating the feature into a traditional brokerage environment, Interactive Brokers lowers some of the operational barriers that may have prevented investors from participating in Ethereum’s proof-of-stake system.
The move reflects a wider trend toward institutional access to crypto yield products.
TechGaged has explored a similar development involving BlackRock’s proposed staking-focused Ethereum investment product.
Why the Expansion Matters
Staking can reduce the amount of ETH immediately available for sale on exchanges.
When investors commit tokens to staking, those assets help secure Ethereum and generate rewards, although they are not permanently removed from circulation.
Brokerage platforms that simplify staking could encourage more eligible investors to participate.
If adoption grows significantly, the shift may influence the balance between liquid supply and demand.
The development also highlights a difference between traditional spot investment products and staking services.
Spot products generally provide price exposure, while staking enables direct participation in Ethereum’s proof-of-stake system. Each approach has different risks, costs and potential benefits.
Price Action Reflects Broader Caution
The seven-day chart shows Ethereum retreating from levels above $2,550. After a period of relative stability around the mid-$2,500s, selling pressure returned, bringing ETH closer to $2,430.

The decline has been gradual rather than disorderly, but it shows that expanding staking access does not automatically translate into immediate price gains.
Broader market sentiment, investor demand and liquidity conditions continue to influence ETH.
Meanwhile, TechGaged recently reported that Ethereum exchange balances had fallen to a very small share of total supply, with staking and decentralized finance among the factors keeping tokens away from exchanges.
A Gradual Shift in ETH Supply
Interactive Brokers’ launch is unlikely to trigger an immediate surge in staked ETH. Adoption will depend on client eligibility, awareness, staking terms and investor appetite for the associated risks.
However, the development adds another route through which traditional investors can participate in Ethereum staking without managing validators themselves.
TechGaged has also documented how large corporate holders are committing substantial ETH positions to staking, demonstrating that institutional participation extends beyond brokerage customers.

Over time, broader staking participation could reduce immediately available supply. Whether that supports ETH’s price will depend on how this change interacts with new demand, withdrawals and wider market conditions.
