Frequently Asked Questions

What is a crypto ETF?

A crypto exchange-traded fund (ETF) is an investment fund that trades on a traditional stock exchange and tracks the price of one or more cryptocurrencies. Buying a share gives exposure to the underlying asset without holding coins, running a wallet or managing private keys, and shares trade through an ordinary brokerage account during market hours.

Crypto ETFs are not all built the same way. Spot funds hold the actual cryptocurrency with a regulated custodian, while futures-based funds track the price through regulated futures contracts instead. The structure determines what a fund holds, what it costs and how closely it tracks the asset, so check the Type column in the table above before comparing two funds on price alone.

Outside the US, crypto exposure is often packaged as an exchange-traded note (ETN) or an exchange-traded commodity (ETC). An ETN is a debt instrument that promises a benchmark’s return, so the holder also takes on the issuer’s credit risk; an ETC is typically backed by the underlying coin held as collateral. Neither is legally the same product as a US ETF.

How is ETF net flow calculated?

Net flow for a fund on a given trading day is the value of newly created shares minus the value of shares redeemed, in US dollars. A positive figure means the fund issued shares and bought more of the underlying asset; a negative figure means shares were redeemed and the asset was sold. The totals on this page aggregate every tracked fund, and issuers publish their figures after the US market closes, so the most recent complete day is always the previous trading day.

Sustained inflows show new capital entering through regulated products and spot supply moving into custody, while persistent outflows point to risk-off positioning or profit taking. Flow data is a demand signal rather than a price forecast — heavy flows and flat prices regularly occur together, and single-day figures are noisy. Five-day and thirty-day trends are more informative, especially read alongside sentiment gauges such as the Crypto Fear and Greed Index.

What does AUM mean for an ETF?

AUM, or assets under management, is the total market value of everything a fund holds — its shares outstanding multiplied by its net asset value. It reflects the fund’s current size rather than its daily trading activity, and the totals on this page combine every tracked fund.

AUM as a share of market cap shows how much of an asset’s total value now sits inside ETFs. A rising share means funds hold a growing portion of circulating supply, which tightens the amount available to trade on the open market. The AUM / Market Cap chart above plots that ratio over time, and it moves with the Bitcoin price as well as with flows.

Why do ETF prices differ from an ETF's net asset value?

Net asset value (NAV) is the per-share value of a fund’s holdings. Market price can trade slightly above NAV (a premium) or below it (a discount), because shares trade continuously while NAV is struck once a day, and because creation and redemption take time to settle.

The Premium/Discount column in the table above shows the current gap for each fund. Liquid spot ETFs usually stay within a fraction of a percent of NAV, while less liquid or closed-ended structures can drift much further.

How often is this data updated?

Prices and trading volumes update throughout the trading day. Net flow and AUM figures come from issuer daily reports, which are published after the US market closes, so the newest complete flow day is the previous trading day. Hong Kong listed funds follow their own local reporting schedule. The date shown on the Net Flow card above is the most recent completed flow day on record.

Do these figures include both US and Hong Kong listed ETFs?

Yes. Net flow and AUM totals combine every tracked Bitcoin ETF listed in the US and Hong Kong with every tracked Ethereum ETF listed in the US, and they include futures and strategy products alongside spot funds. Hong Kong listed funds report on their own local schedule, so their figures can lag the US ones by a session.

Is there an ETF that tracks crypto?

Yes. Spot crypto ETFs hold the underlying cryptocurrency in custody and track its market price, while futures-based ETFs track price through regulated futures contracts. US spot Bitcoin ETFs launched in January 2024 and spot Ethereum ETFs in July 2024, with Hong Kong listed spot products arriving the same year. Every fund tracked here appears in the table above with its asset and structure — see the Bitcoin ETF tracker for BTC funds on their own.

What are the largest crypto ETFs by AUM?

The fund table above is sorted by assets under management by default, so the largest crypto ETFs appear first, and it updates each trading day. Rankings shift as flows move between funds, and the biggest fund for one asset is not necessarily the cheapest or the most actively traded — read the Net Fee and Volume columns alongside AUM before comparing two funds on size.

Which crypto ETF is best?

There is no single best crypto ETF; the right fund depends on which asset you want exposure to and what you are optimising for. Four things account for most of the difference between funds tracking the same asset: the annual expense ratio, shown as Net Fee in the table above; trading volume and liquidity, which drive bid-ask spreads and how closely market price tracks NAV; the issuer and custodian behind the fund; and the structure, spot or futures.

Flow and positioning data help with timing rather than fund selection. The net-flow chart above shows where capital is moving, and funding rates show how leveraged traders are positioned in the same assets.

What is the difference between a spot and a futures crypto ETF?

A spot ETF holds the actual cryptocurrency with a custodian, so its share price tracks the spot market directly. A futures ETF holds regulated futures contracts instead, with no direct ownership of the asset. Because expiring contracts must be rolled forward, futures products can carry extra cost and drift away from spot prices over longer holding periods. Futures ETFs were the first crypto ETFs approved in the US, arriving in October 2021, well before spot products were permitted.

What fees do crypto ETFs charge?

Crypto ETFs charge an annual expense ratio, deducted from fund assets. Rates vary meaningfully between issuers, including between funds tracking the same asset, and some funds launched with temporary fee waivers. The Net Fee column in the table above shows the current published rate for each tracked fund. Fees compound, so a gap that looks small over a month is not small over several years.

Are there ETFs for altcoins like Solana and XRP?

Beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum, ETFs and multi-asset index products now exist in the market for other cryptocurrencies including Solana and XRP. This page currently tracks Bitcoin and Ethereum funds, and the coin badge beside each ticker in the combined table shows which asset a fund holds.

To narrow the table to a single asset, use the tabs above — Bitcoin ETF lists BTC funds on their own.

The Ethereum ETF tracker does the same for ether funds, including the futures and strategy products listed alongside them.

Where does CoinStats get its crypto ETF data?

Net flow and AUM figures are compiled from the daily reports that ETF issuers publish after the US market closes, which means the most recent complete flow day is the previous trading day. Prices, trading volumes and premium/discount are calculated from market data feeds and refresh through the trading day. Expense ratios reflect each fund’s current published rate, including any active fee waiver. Hong Kong listed funds are sourced from their own local disclosures and follow a separate reporting schedule.

Figures are shown in US dollars and provided for research and information purposes only. Nothing on this page is investment advice or a recommendation to buy or sell any fund.

Can I track crypto ETF flows on mobile?

Yes. The CoinStats app for iOS, Android and macOS includes ETF flow data alongside portfolio tracking, price alerts and market charts, so you can check daily inflows and outflows without opening a browser. The same figures shown on this page are available in the app.
